Refining Leadership: How to Lead Authentically without Burnout
When I initially considered becoming a leader in Human Resources, I was intimidated by the responsibility of the role all together. I thought about how I had only been in the role for a year and now I am being considered for a Leadership position.
I was afraid that I’d burnout because of how demanding the role could be. However, instead of letting these thoughts consume me, I began to devise a plan; a strategy that I could lean on during the moments of Leadership that are a bit much for a highly sensitive, highly empathetic person like myself.
Before you continue reading, I want to express that you are not alone. You are fully capable of supporting others while also prioritizing your needs. I hope as you continue reading, you feel empowered to try the strategies below. Try them on, see how they fit for you and your unique needs to prevent burnout.
Establish Clear Boundaries
Yes, I know how may times I’ve suggested setting boundaries. But it is essential for maintaining balance and preventing burnout. Clearly define your work hours and communicate these to your team. Ensure that you have time set aside for personal activities that recharge your energy. Even if that means setting an alarm on your phone to remind you to go to lunch, or to take a break.Prioritize Self-Care
Integrate self-care practices into your routine. This could include regular exercise, practicing a quick meditation like the Executive Reset, or simply taking time to unwind with a good book. Self-care is not a luxury; it's a necessity for maintaining your well-being.Delegate and Empower Your Team
Effective delegation is key to preventing burnout. Trust your team to handle tasks and empower them to make decisions. Especially, during peak holiday seasons. If you’ll be out of office for a week, trust that your team will operate just as smooth as if you were there. This not only lightens your load but also fosters a sense of ownership and growth within your team.Practice Mindfulness
Incorporate mindfulness practices to help manage stress and stay present. Whether it’s through breathing exercises, journaling, or mindful listening, these practices can enhance your focus and emotional resilience. This is a great way to use your lunch time. Eating is a mindful practice. A ritual of nourishing the self. When you’re on lunch, make an effort of choosing foods that feel good. Consider how much water you’ve had for the day. Does weather allow you to take a walk or sit outside in the sun? Mindfulness is a personal experience, that’s meant to replenish your energy.Seek Support and Mentorship
Connect with mentors or peers who understand the challenges of leadership. Having a support system can provide valuable insights, encouragement, and a sense of camaraderie. There’s nothing like being able to pick up the phone or send a quick teams message to a colleague and having the opportunity to collaborate on ideas or gain clarity on a process.Reflect and Adjust
Regularly take time to reflect on your experiences and adjust your strategies as needed. This ongoing reflection helps you stay aligned with your values and ensures you are leading authentically. I would recommend doing this quarterly, to keep your approach growing with you.Set Realistic Goals
Break down your objectives into manageable tasks. Setting achievable goals can prevent overwhelm and give you a sense of accomplishment as you progress. SMART goals may feel like a basic concept but it works. Develop a framework for yourself that will hold you accountable and empower you to maintain momentum.Create a Positive Work Environment
Foster a culture of positivity and open communication within your team. Celebrate successes and encourage feedback to create an inclusive atmosphere. Prioritizing opportunities where you can give and receive feedback, ensures that employees feel heard and that their feedback is valuable.Limit Multitasking
Focus on one task at a time to improve productivity and reduce stress. Multitasking can lead to decreased efficiency and increased feelings of being overwhelmed. I like to listen to music like lofi beats, to keep my focused on my work. In the event, I am being asked a question and I’m in the middle of an email, I will finish my thought and then begin to help.Invest in Professional Development
Continuously seek opportunities for learning and growth. Attend workshops, conferences, or online courses to enhance your skills and keep your knowledge up to date. If the organization you work for doesn’t announce upcoming trainings and workshops, inquire about reimbursement if you pay for your classes and trainings.
By implementing a variety of personal and professional strategies, you can navigate the challenges of leadership with confidence and care, ensuring that you remain energized and effective in your role. Remember, leadership is a journey, and taking care of yourself is crucial to leading others successfully.
